“The world is like a ride in an amusement park and when you choose to go on it you think it’s real because that’s how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and around and around and it has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly coloured and it’s very loud. And it’s fun – for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question; is this real? Or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, and they say, “Hey, don’t worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because… this is just a ride.”- Bill Hicks, Love All The Peoplebillhicks.jpg

Another way of looking at it is this: the choice is yours. Yes, of course, Stuff Happens, but for the majority of the readers of this post, you have a pretty big say in where your life goes.

No? Disagree? OK, try this one, it’s a new Imp game, born of having time to think (a new past-time, and the muscles are only just beginning to develop). Let’s go:

1. Take a piece of paper. At the top, write a few words that describe your life now, your Circumstances. Might be something like, “50-hour week, accountant, live-in lover, suburban hell” or “rural idyll, composer, poverty, monthly gay shag-buddy”. You choose, as long as it’s true – where you put the emphasis is your call.

2. Under each phrase, draw a downwards line. The line stands for “why?”. Write the answer at the end of the line. Remember, it’s “why?” and not “how?”: check each one to make sure it’s not a How. So, under “50 hour week” it might read, “need to get promoted”; under “live-in lover” could be “marry him?!”, under “poverty” might be “I hate wealth” or “my rabbit ate my inheritance”.

3. Keep going. Keep going. Down the page. Come on, more…don’t just read this and smile, do it! It is really interesting. You might want to get more sheets of paper and some sellotape, so you can make space for more lines and more writing. You might find some of the lines have to join up across the page.winged-heels.jpg

4. Make your WHYs really searching – make the answers true and not glib or shallow. If you get tempted into some HOWs, ok, do ’em, but there’s gotta be a Why next door.

5. Post me a comment, say what happened. If a few come through, I’ll tell you what happened here….Let’s compare. But if you don’t do it (wimp), you’re going to have no idea what we’re talking about: you really have to Do This to get it. Five minutes on the bus, tube, ‘phone to Mum, that dull meeting, go on!

Remember, “Hey, don’t worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because… this is just a ride.”
